February is American Heart Month

More than one in three Americans over the age of 18 has cardiovascular disease.

Every minute someone dies from a coronary event in the United States.

African-Americans have the highest age-adjusted death rate for cardiovascular disease followed by Caucasians, Hispanics, and Asians. Research studies and reports have documented disparities in quality and access to health care for racial and ethnic minorities. Consider pursuing a health career that focuses on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of heart disease on ExploreHealthCareers.org:

  • Help save lives. Becoming an Emergency Medicine Physician. If you or a loved-one experiences symptoms of a heart attack or another type of medical emergency, ER physicians make sure you receive a quick diagnoses and appropriate treatment.
  • Did you know that poor oral health may cause cardiovascular diseaseDentists play a critical role in helping patients maintain proper oral health. Dental Hygienists educate patients about oral hygiene and preventive oral health.
  • An active lifestyle helps prevent heart disease. Exercise Physiologists oversee the analysis, improvement, and maintenance of health and fitness including the rehabilitation of heart disease and other chronic diseases and disabilities.
  • Education and health promotion can encourage people to make healthy life choices. Consider a career as a Behavioral Science/Health Education Public Health Specialist.
