According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, 13 of the 30 fastest growing careers from 2006 to 2016 are health care careers. These positions range from Veterinary Technicians in the number 5 slot to Physician's Assistants at number 30.
This data was analyzed on the website www.worldwidelearn.com and put into the format of Top 10 Jobs for the Next Decade and Top 10 Jobs for the Next Millennium. In the next decade, 3 of the 10 are occupied by health care careers (Elder Care Specialist #3, Home Health Aide #6 and Physician's Assistant #9). In the next millennium, Home Health Care Services moves to the #1 spot, with Residential Care Facilities career sliding into #4 and Outpatient Laboratory and other Ambulatory Care Services residing at #10. The prediction for these needs are attributed to the Baby Boomer population entering senior citizenhood, and with that, displaying the health needs of an aging population.
Those needs will be demonstrated in the increased call for Physical Therapists, Clinical Lab Techs, Respiratory Therapists, Nurses of all levels (Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, Certified Nurse Aide), Medical Assistants, Mental Health Counselors, Pharmacy Technicians, Radiological Technicians and the like. In the state of Connecticut, you can learn more about these careers, and where to study to pursue them, by visiting the AHEC of Connecticut H.O.T. Guide website at www.healthcareersinct.com .
